2011 HR Software market trends

Cloud computing sample architecture

I was reading a post on the software advice blog about where the HR software market is going.

It looks like firms are not going to buy a new HR software this year, but rather implement some new improvements on their existing software, such as administration and employees dashboards and self service as well as tracking for key HR metrics.

The big trend this year seem to be cloud based, software as a service HR systems.

I can see why they are quickly rising to the top as if you think about it, you probably use lots of cloud based services daily already, such as Dropbox or other apps that make your work easier (one I use is Wunderlist for to do management).

I think that the ability to access an application regardless of time or place is simply astonishing.
From the point of view of a company with multiple offices around the world, surely located in different time zones is a great advantage as they don’t have to wait for a colleague to be in the office to have information about an employee annual leave or check if they signed a document. They can access all these information by accessing an internet page with their personal login credentials.

Quoting Christopher Baum, from the above mentioned article:

Cloud-based HR systems are in strong demand. Aside from cost of ownership benefits, a compelling benefit of this model is the ability to leave the provider responsible for keeping the software compliant with current rules and regulations.

I think cloud based HR systems are definitely the way forward for the HR software market and for all software for that matter.

FUTURES – Microsoft’s European Innovation Magazine

Some time ago I posted an entry with regards to cloud computing and hr software. Today, I would like to get back to that, or sort of. In Europe, Microsoft publishes The Futures magazine, which according to their website “was created in 2007 to showcase best practices and case studies in Innovation, R&D, and highlight achievements across Europe”. I am telling you this because the new Futures issue is just out. This issue’s title is “Small Business: Europe’s innovation engine”. I am thrilled that one of our favorite hr software has been featured on this issue with a two pages article. John Dennehy, talks about how important is the cloud to both hr software provider and customers. Small business now are empowered with the right tools to get bigger and faster. If you are interested in reading the full article, here’s the PDF version featuring hr software.

Cloud computing and the future

You’ve probably heard of cloud computing a lot recently. It’s like one of the buzz words of the moment. Well, it has been for a while. There is a whole new industry behind it and also new concerns arise about the security provided. Some firms have used this as a possibility to tap into new markets, like create security as a service.  Others, have touched with hand the safety guarantees given by cloud computing platforms providers like Microsoft, and are happy to use them for business. Let’s explain. According to Wikipedia  Microsoft’ Azure Services Platform is “an application platform in the cloud that allows applications to be hosted and run at Microsoft’ datacenters. It provides a cloud operating system called Windows Azure that serves as a runtime for the applications and provides a set of services that allows development, management and hosting of applications off-premises”. The key points here are the trust and security offered to firms using Windows Azure services as well as the possibility to manage application from basically anywhere. article alley  reassures even the most skeptical ones that cloud computing technology “will be the wave of the future and will likely be changing how people use the info road for decades to come”.
Wikipedia gives also couple of examples of how and which company is using the Windows Azure platform and we note here an interesting application development. HR Locker, a Web 2.0 provider of  HR solutions to small to medium size companies was built on Window’s Azure cloud based computing platform. HR Locker chose to build their application on Windows Azure to avoid the worry of scalability, backup, security and the various other issues associated with hosting. This choice, provides the peace of mind that HR Locker customers deserve, as they are cared for.  So, if you are not convinced that SaaS are actually the future of business apps, pay a visit to the above mentioned free hr software website, and see for yourself.
